I have a lot of good friends in Latin America and it’s too bad we don’t see each other as often as we’d like to. Antonio is one of them. He calls once or twice a year and whenever I fly south, he’s one of the friends I see. I met him on a fishing trip once and we hit it off right away. It always surprised me to see how little it took to keep him dry and comfortable outdoors. I always took my best sleeping bag, the newest lightweight portable cooking stove, Patagonia Gore-Tex breathable jacket and pants, etc. He was the opposite. His equipment consisted of a woolen cap, a woolen sweater, matches, a plastic bag, a big poncho, fishing line wrapped around a piece of cardboard with several hooks stuck in the same cardboard and a small backpack with a few things: salt, pepper, two or three lemons, a pound of cheese and that’s about it. For puma hunting of condor trapping it was about the same thing, except he had two more sweaters, woolen socks and no fishing line. The first time we went up into the Andes together, we took no food at all. I wondered how that would work out, but just about the time I thought we would go hungry, we came up to the shack of sheepherder he knew, bought a lamb, a dozen eggs, some potatoes and that night we feasted. At the time, I didn’t know what to do with a lamb, but he tied the legs together, threw it on the pack horse and with the animal bleating away, we climb for the next three hours.

That night he killed it, skinned it and had it spread eagle on some sticks next to our fire in less than ten minutes – and I never tasted anything better. He also knew where a hot spring was and the next morning I took a one hour bath in steaming water inside a hole he dug himself years earlier. I had seen pictures of people doing that in Iceland, but not in the Andes. Antonio reminded me that if you knew where to look, the mountains where full of hot water vents.

Now the Andes have something new: cell phone signal, sometimes good strong ones and the other day he called. This article is about that call.

Several years ago I posted a video of a young condor learning to fly in the video section. In the video, there are a lot of condors. Recently, I have seen less and I think it’s because sheep ranchers leave out poisoned meat wrongly thinking that condors kill the lambs. They don’t. Condors are vultures and only eat carrion.
