Guest essay – not published . . . so sad :(

Posted on Posted in Blog, Books by other authors

Here is a letter I wrote to the Denton Record Chronicle that did not get published. Sean McCrory, its executive editor, was nice enough to write back explaining that “a response to a column it’s not something we normally would do as a guest essay.” He suggested I shorten it as “a letter to the editor.” Time restraints kept me from doing so and by the time I could get to it, I decided that it was dated anyway as another alarmist article was already in print from the so called Watchdog. For those of you that are interested in what I had to say . . .

Watching The Watchdog.

I’ve been trying to hold back, not say anything, be nice, even kind, as I imagine many others have, only I can’t. I’m referring to the last article (6-21) from the so called Watchdog in the Denton Record Chronicle, demanding transparency as it concerns hamburger buns: the so called #BunGate. I don’t blame you if you ask “What?” But yes, you deciphered it right. With 100 degree weather, immigration problems at the border, people dying like flies from accidents and shootings on the streets of Denton, politicians in Washington at each other’s throats, not to mention our wallets, plus the World Cup (every four years), we have an article on what’s going on with buns in our vicinity. Or rather the lack of them.

At first I thought it was a joke. As in April Fools’ or some such. But no. It seems that some people spent a week trying to find out what and who is causing the buns to go sour and south.

The article reminded me of Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman digging and scratching to find the identity of Deep Throat during the Watergate scandal. Reading that the “cover-up is usually worse than the crime” is probably what jogged my memory of that disgraceful episode in our nation’s history. And if you are not particular with what you read and have the imagination to live beyond your means, then the secrecy surrounding our missing buns will read like a fast paced mystery: there’s the souring clue, the frantic phone calls, the getting nowhere, the denials, the keep on digging, the unreturned phone calls, the emphatic “not us” until finally a hint: someone knows but is not telling. Grab your buns. Yikes!

I sort of get the fact that some people need to be told not to hire the first roofer who calls after a hailstorm and that AT&T just wants your money, but the point of #BunGate escapes me. Do I have to be told not to eat buns that smell like year old sour pickles? Come to think of it, when I . . . never mind.

I saw an ad once, in this same paper, about English as a Second Language classes (ESL) being offered. The ad was in English. I suppose it told all of us that didn’t need those classes, that they were available. I doubt it reached a single person that could have used the help. “Good job” to whoever placed that ad.

And “good job” to The Watchdog for reminding us of a problem that nobody noticed or cared about. There is no hail, so roofers are storm-chasing somewhere else, for now, plus AT&T bought Time Warner anyway: if you can’t run a phone company, you might as well try global media and entertainment. Where was The Watchdog then?

So, I decided to keep an eye on The Watchdog, between games at the World Cup. I love the unique and energetic way this dog wastes time. Nobody else is keeping an eye on him, and someone needs to.
