Volcanoes . . .

Eruption of Volcán Calbuco in 2015.

A picture taken last March by my son Juan Pablo, the day he was preparing to bike up the Villarrica Volcano in Southern Chile. Fortunately, he had enough sense to postpone the trip until next March, when supposedly things will have calmed down.

That morning the volcano was rumbling so that everyone could hear it, and the lights signaling volcanic activity at the base of Villarrica were yellow, signifying caution, as opposed to green, meaning all is well, or red meaning run like hell–which is pretty much what he and Devon, his tour partner, ended up doing. I’m guessing that at the time, it was every man for himself.

A week later he was camped at the base of the Calbuco volcano, approx. 100 miles to the south. A week after that. it blew, covering the campsite with 18″ of white ash and VW size boulders. Nothing subtle about volcanoes or their cousins. It does however, make for some fast getaways and great pictures.
