Abalones were out of season, at least officially, but what was that to Joaquín? He never paid much attention to seasons, or quotas, or anything else, and had been the major “underground” year-round supplier of this particular rock snail to most of the area restaurants for years.
He gave several reasons for his activities: one, if he didn’t do it, somebody else would. Two, the government never ever thought of the abalone divers when they came up with their quotas and length of harvest season. To Joaquín, that was a big mistake, absolutely and totally reprehensible, and left the door wide open for him. Three . . . well, if you needed a third one, you never tasted an abalone, covered in homemade mayo on a bed of fresh lettuce with an avocado stuffed with crab meat on the side. He had other excuses, or reasons, but those were the main ones. The police, to be sure, were always right behind him, except without enough resources, the main one being a good imagination, had never caught him or even got close—so far.”
