OPEC, a power once, now a dinosaur . . .

Recently and for the first time in 75 years, we became a net exporter of oil, as opposed to a mayor importer. If you think this is confusing, try looking at it from OPEC’s point of view. If they produce more, the price drops, while net income remains the same. If they cut production, oil prices rise, they make the same, but west Texas, the main instigator of this conundrum and this country as a whole, gets richer. Meantime, we have less than $2.00/gallon gas—for those of us who buy regular. Actually, I mention OPEC as an example of a dinosaur: a big player once, now extinct and totally irrelevant. They are yesterday’s news, 70’s news and maybe they think they are “players,” but no, they are not.

So the government crows about this as an example of free enterprise, capitalism and the American Way, and it is, but the United Nations is freaking out. According to them, we are on a self-inflicted path to eminent destruction, a sort of slow suicide. So who to believe? And here’s the rub: both sides have convincing arguments, with enough credentials including Nobel laureates to choke on, arriving at totally opposite conclusions using the same data available to us all.

To sum it up: there’s no argument that things are changing and our climate is warming. The main effort seems to be looking for someone to blame: is it us? or the Chinese? or just a natural cycle? And remember, there is no money to be made with a natural cycle, so, let’s rule that out. And it’s easier to blame the Chinese, so let’s rule them in. We’re free and clear! You’ve got to love it.
