Guest essay. “Tell my family I love them.” Denton Record Chronicle. 11-25-18

It was hard to keep this one short, and ironic, since it deals with brevity being good, a less is more approach, as opposed to long windedness and hot air, but still, a limit of 500 words is, believe it or not, hard to keep. Just about the time one gets a good head of steam, you look down and realize you’re 200 words over your limit and the punch line is still over the horizon and a long way off. Anyway, 500 words is good and I ask for no more. It keeps things tight, limits you to one or two ideas, usually only one, and people tell me they like it that way. Still, Edward Everett, for example, deserved a few more lines, and I wrote them, but I had to delete them. So did Abraham Lincoln for that matter, and so did Gettysburg, the civil war, and many other things . . . you see the need for a limit, otherwise I’d still be researching and writing.
