Guest essay. The Easy Part. Denton Record Chronicle, 3-24-20

My dad was a smart guy and after a career in psychiatry most of us thought nothing would surprise him ‒ he even thought so ‒ but there is always the exception.

I wrote this to point out how hard it is to control oneself and maintain something as simple as a New Year’s resolution, or anything else for that matter, even for a short time. Simple, however, is not to be confused with easy. To stay on track day after day, one basically needs to have the iron will of a samurai warrior or be put in a situation where there are no other choices. For those that want to change something in their lives and fall short of the elite warrior’s impeccable resolve, removing temptation is the next best choice.
