Newspapers have been slowly dying across the country and it’s only natural. There are many reasons for this, and to me, they are unavoidable: Internet platforms like Craig’s List and E-Bay took away their advertising, TV and radio, plus other news outlets make printed news look stale, since papers usually comes a day or two late, and people nowadays are simply not interested in reading. For the most part, they prefer a one minute blurt that can be absorb privately and on the run, either while driving or cooking or some such. And along with less revenue comes mediocre reporting, less variety, stale personal opinions and endless repetition, so naturally the death spiral quickens.
It’s like watching a doomed star going into a black hole, spinning faster and faster, going down an imaginary gravitational funnel, gaining ever increasing speed, until poof, it’s gone without a whimper. At least that’s how I imagine it to be.
“A person who won’t read has no advantage over one who can’t read”. A quote attributed to Mark Twain, although unfortunately, I didn’t hear him say it.
Reading, with time to understand and enjoy the writing is critical, I think, and the reason I still get most of my news from the printed page. Also, sharing a newspaper is a good way to discuss the issues at hand with those around you, for kids to learn from the adults around them . . ..
Here is the ling to the Denton Record Chronicle and my thoughts on the subject: Our morning tradition. https://bit.ly/2zrf8ll
