I always thought it was called a first violin because the person was fast and the rest were trying their best to keep up. Somehow I knew the first one to finished didn’t necessarily win anything, but I would not want to be the one that finish last . . ..
Here is a letter I found on my inbox this morning. It’s from my daughter Cristi, who works for International Paper, currently in Memphis doing some training. I decided to share, and for all those that thought like I did, think again!
—As part of this week’s leadership training, my group spent today with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Literally, sitting next to them on stage, observing firsthand how each individual leads or follows depending on the conductor and the score and their assigned role. From a distance, it just looks like everyone is focused on playing their own bit. When in reality, in order to do their piece they have to be hyper-conscious of the instruments in play and who is doing what, so that everyone can adapt and make their instruments blend in with one another. It’s constant interpretation and negotiation and creative license. And so much fun!
Two absolute highlights of the day:
First, witnessing the deconstruction of a piece of Beethoven’s 7th into its component parts, and seeing it put back together again.
And second, taking my turn conducting 🙂
xoxo,
Cristi
