Category: Music

Music is found in every culture and the cultures along the Andes Mountains were no different: the Incas, Mayans, Quechua, Mapuches, Olmec, Toltec, Moche, Aymara and the Highland Quichuas of Ecuador, but just a few. Like most cultures, they had their own music, their own dances and their own way of doing things. The European colonist tried hard to root out non-Christian beliefs and true to form, burned all books and pre-Columbian records they found, even though they could not read them and had no idea what they said. The music, however, survived. My favorite is the pan flute of the highlands of Peru and Northern Chile. That and the guitar, although I imagine the guitar is not traditional like the flute and got there with the Spanish. Still, the music remains and I love it.
