Arriva! I finally found the book I was looking for: a collection of recipes and herbal remedies gathered in and around Múzquiz. Not only does it have a wonderful way to cook Huevos (de toro) con ensalada de nopalitos, or Patitas de Puerco en salsa de jijomate as well as la famosisima Ensalada de papas de doña Matilde, but it shows how to make Atole blanco or Atole champurrado, your choice. And those are for starters. It has many other wonderful looking and exotic sounding dishes, as well as a long list of herbal remedies for everything from indigestion and bloated stomach to depression, susto o espanto and sunstroke, your choice again. For those of that can’t tell the difference between susto and espanto, it also explains that. The recipes come first, then the medicines. It’s kind of like a collaboration between a Coahuila born Julia Child, and the Latino version of the run up to Alka-Seltzer in one easy to read handy cookbook.
But that’s not all. It also goes into some lengths to explain how to cure being hexed, prevent malevolent spirits or being personally salted, things all persons must fear unless born on St. John’s day, June 24. Nonetheless, with this book, all others not born on this one lucky day can insure constant protection, including from maleficio, which as you know, is the worst.
