“Arturo laughed thinking of his friend Joaquín. They had been friends forever, “geologically speaking.” Arturo laughed again. Since kids really, and the miracle of it was that as different as they were, they were still best friends, like brothers, and enjoyed each other’s company every day. Arturo thought of his circular theory and wondered how long it would take his friend to pick holes in it. Joaquín was a specialist at picking holes in things, particularly theories, and any theory of Arturo’s was a prime target. Joaquín is like a starving moth, thought Arturo. All one had to do was figure out a good, hard-working theory on something, anything, in this case, the circular nature of river-life as opposed to the linear nature of city-life, and Joaquín, like a hungry moth in a deep, favorite-sweater drawer, would work quietly and diligently for a week or two, and by that time a favorite would be so full of holes, it would be useless for anything as mundane as keeping warm, in a fashionable sort of way, and time already to knit a new one.

Arturo then wondered if he was just no good at coming up with moth-proof theories, or his friend was a very powerful moth with iron jaws and a huge appetite for his kind of yarn.”
