News worth reading . . .

So never mind the article about the new solar-powered coal museum, or the man arrested for aiming his rifle at the Jack in The Box, or Mohammad Ali, 29, indicted for possession of controlled substance with intent to deliver, or even the battle over the phrase “damn good tacos” now headed to federal court in Colorado. What caught my eye in last Sunday’s paper were two items: The first one was about the guy in South Dakota who was fined for not having his pet on a leash. True. $190 dollars. Somebody complained about his pet snake running loose and the park ranger came out and issued the appropriate fine, at the same time suggesting he put the snake on a leash. The owner was dumbfounded: not only at the blatant overreach of authority, but also questioning where on the snake to put a leash.

The second item, and one I really liked (apologies to Dallas) was about the Dallas emergency sirens being hacked—and turned on multiple times during the night. Starting at 11:42 pm. Friday, to be precise, and wailing away until someone deactivated them by 1:17 am. It must be true because the Denton Record-Chronicle has a tragic, likewise incurable, lack of imagination and no way is this fake fun-news. But even if it were, what a hoot! Who thinks of such things? (Hint. Not Russia. Better to check six grade classes in the affected area for students still high-fiving each other). Genius.

And I quote: “We shut down as quickly as we could, taking into consideration all of the precautions and protocols we had to take to make sure that we were not compromising our 156-siren system.”

Is there a protocol for pulling the plug? No doubt people in charge were kept busy following their rule books, not to mention the 911 operators fielding thousands of calls.

Give me a break. Sorry guys, I can’t help laughing at modern times and modern ways. And what about “compromising our system.” A little too late for that, don’t you think?

I’m not advocating hacking mind you, (well, okay, a little) or for that matter, anybody buying the paper, which, I admit, is horrible, but occasionally, just once in a blue moon, some fun tidbits make it pass the editor’s strike-out pen and there’s something worth reading.
