When you read history you realize that what seems like news today is for the most part nothing new: the same stuff has been happening no different than today, other than time and place, for a long, long time. Take for instance, Socrates complaining about youth: “The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room.” Sound familiar? Bertrand Russell lamented the homogenization of America in his autobiography, written during the 1960’s. That’s before MacDonald’s and Walmart took over the urban landscape. Presidents get assassinated, wars begin for the same old reasons, the economy bubbles then tanks, France invades Russia, then Germany invades Russia, everybody seems to have invaded Afghanistan at one time or another, and if you doubt that, read Kipling. It’s no different than globalization, and if you didn’t know better, by reading the news, you’d think it’s a brand new thing.
