“Black Jack”

—“Having dashed into Mexico with the intention of eating the Mexicans raw, we turned back at the first repulse and are now sneaking home under cover like a whipped curr (sic) with its tail between his legs.”

—“We were outwitted and out-bluffed at every turn.”

Rueful words from General John Joseph “Black Jack” Pershing after the futile mission to capture or kill Pancho Villa. Pershing, who was later to serve as the commander of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) on the Western Front in World War I, 1917–18 is said to have gathered some experience chasing after Pancho. How running after some Mexican bandits (President Woodrow Wilson’s words, not mine) translated into getting experience for the war in Europe is beyond me. Keep in mind that American forces in Europe first saw serious battle at Cantigny, Chateau-Thierry, Belleau Wood, and the Soissons. What’s more amazing is that one of his lieutenants, who, also served with distinction was George C. Scott. Ok, that’s my little joke, but you know who I mean. Also, this go get’em lieutenant used a 1915 Dodge Brothers Model 30-35 touring car to get around. (The jeep wasn’t invented yet). This model from the new Dodge Brothers company won some recognition if not downright fame for its durability because of its use in the 1916 Pancho Villa Expedition.

Anyway I can resist and will write a story about this expedition. It is just too good, too full of fun tidbits and I can’t pass it up.

What this has to do with our meeting tomorrow at El Chap, I don’t know. Not a clue.

A la hora de siempre,

¡Viva Pancho, Viva!

PS. All soldiers who took part in the Villa campaign were awarded the Mexican Service Medal.
