For Dale, this was an adventure, and every single time he went out with Joaquín on one of his “night runs,” it was a revelation to him. Joaquín had a lot of irons in the fire and never the same irons.
It did not pass unnoticed that when Joaquín was out working, there was no moon, and if there was, it was only for a few hours, and it was foggy at water level the whole time anyway. His timing was always perfect.
So quiet, was the impression Dale had of the river at that moment, as if they had interrupted the normal croaking and occasional splashing and secret whispers of the night, and the creatures that made them were just like Joaquín and preferred to go unnoticed. At one point, Dale decided that he could determine where they were but other than not near the ocean, and that because there was no salt smell or taste to the air, he had no clue and gave it up.
“What’s on the agenda after this?” Dale was still curious.
“Almost done for the night. We go to Punucapa next . . . that will take an hour, then I drop you off at the farm.”
